Behaviour support works with the family and child to understand why behaviour occurs, produces a behaviour support plan with strategies to meet the child's needs and build skills, includes a plan to reduce and eliminate restrictive practices, and reviews progress with the family, following state and territory laws. A provider never forces a child, isolates them as punishment, takes down, holds down or pins down a child (such as bear hugs or basket holds), withholds a desired activity because the child refused something, yells at the child, or restricts a body part with a strap or garment to develop another when no progress is being made; restrictive practices not in a behaviour support plan are not used.
