Standard 3: Preventing and Controlling Infections – Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition

Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition 3.15-3.16: A risk-based workforce screening and immunisation program follows the Australian Immunisation Handbook and jurisdictional requirements, and workforce infection risks are managed through screening, exclusion, non-attendance when unwell, movement control, support for isolation and quarantine, outbreak management and service continuity planning

Staff screening and immunisation against vaccine-preventable disease must run as a risk-based policy and program aligned to the national immunisation handbook and jurisdictional rules, addressing the particular risks to staff, consumers and patients. Workforce infection must be prevented and managed on a risk basis consistent with state or territory safety regulation and the national guidelines: public health rules on screening and exclusion followed, novel infection risks managed, staff encouraged to stay away when unwell and not to visit or volunteer, movement between areas, settings and organisations watched and managed, staff in isolation or quarantine supported, outbreaks monitored, investigated and managed, and services kept running through outbreaks and pandemics.
