Standard 3: Preventing and Controlling Infections – Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition

Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition 3.05: A surveillance strategy collects and uses data on healthcare-associated and other infections and on antimicrobial use and appropriateness, incorporates national and jurisdictional information, reports to the workforce, board and consumers, and tracks responsiveness to identified risks

A surveillance strategy must cover infections, infection risk and antimicrobial prescribing and use: it must take in national and jurisdictional intelligence promptly, gather data on other infections and on healthcare-associated ones, proportionate to the service, turn that data into risk reduction, report it to staff, the board, consumers and others, gather data on how much and how appropriately antimicrobials are used, apply that to better prescribing, check that identified risks are acted on, and report antimicrobial use findings to the same audiences.
