Standard 3: Preventing and Controlling Infections – Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition

Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition 3.10-3.11: A hand hygiene program consistent with the National Hand Hygiene Initiative audits compliance, addresses non-compliance against benchmarks, reports results and actions, and improves compliance; aseptic technique processes identify where it applies, assess and train competence and monitor compliance

Hand hygiene must run as a program inside infection control and standard precautions, aligned to the national hand hygiene initiative and jurisdictional rules, tackling shortfalls against benchmarks, reporting audit results and responses promptly to staff, the board, consumers and others, and using audits to lift compliance. Aseptic technique must have processes that name the procedures it covers, test staff competence, train where gaps appear and monitor adherence to policy.
