Standard 3: Preventing and Controlling Infections – Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition

Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition 3.01-3.04: The clinical governance, quality improvement and consumer partnership systems are applied to infection prevention and control and antimicrobial stewardship: multidisciplinary teams, hierarchy of controls, training, capacity and equipment, performance monitoring and reporting, resource sustainability and pandemic planning

Infection control and antimicrobial stewardship are governed through the clinical governance, improvement and consumer partnership systems. Multidisciplinary groups must find and manage infection risks using the hierarchy of controls, staff must be trained, equipped and resourced to run the controls, stewardship must have its own teams or processes with trained and capable staff, pandemic and public health risks must be planned for, performance and outcomes must be monitored, improved and reported to the board, staff, patients and others, and the use of infection control resources must be safe and sustainable. Clinicians must involve patients, meet their information needs and share decisions when managing infection risk and antimicrobial use.
