Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition 3.12-3.14: Invasive medical devices are used and managed consistently with the national guidelines; the environment is kept clean, safe and hygienic with TGA-listed products, cleaning training, audits and improvement; and infection risks from equipment, areas, building works, linen and novel infections are evaluated and addressed

Invasive devices must be used and managed as the national guidelines direct. The environment must be kept clean, safe and hygienic in line with those guidelines and jurisdictional rules: environmental risks including novel infections answered, cleaning and disinfection done with products on the national therapeutic goods register as their makers instruct and at the right frequency, cleaning staff trained for routine, outbreak and novel-infection work, cleaning effectiveness and policy adherence audited, and audits used to improve. Infection risk must be evaluated and answered for equipment, devices and products whether new or already in use, clinical, non-clinical and amenity spaces, building maintenance, repair and upgrades, linen handling, transport and storage, and novel infections and pandemic planning.
