Standard 4: Pathology laboratory supervision – Australia National Pathology Standards (First Edition 2027)

Australia National Pathology Standards (First Edition 2027) 4.04: GY and B laboratories operate under the network supervision framework the designated person developed, with onsite supervising pathologists of appropriate scope providing supervision where possible and network pathologists covering supervisory gaps

What does 4.04 require?

GY and B laboratories run under the network-wide supervision framework written by the designated person. Where a GY or B site has its own supervising pathologists with the right scope they provide the supervision; where there is a gap, pathologists elsewhere in the network fill it.

This control maps to 3 controls across 1 other frameworks. If you already hold one of them, the evidence you collected for it is the starting point here rather than new work.

  • 17(2)-(3) Hold a written arrangement providing for direction, control and supervision wherever a laboratory relies on a related laboratory, and operate only in the category the Minister specified as appropriate to the premises on the section 17 criteria
  • 17-B Category B (Branch): a laboratory related by a written arrangement to a GX or GY laboratory, under the same designated person as the related laboratory, with testing supervised by a pathologist from within the pathology network
  • 17-GY Category GY (General): a laboratory related by a written arrangement to a GX laboratory, under the direction and control of the GX designated person, with each group of testing under full-time onsite pathologist supervision with the relevant scope of practice (or network-based supervision for some groups)

Every mapping shown was judged rather than inferred from wording similarity, and the ones that failed review are published too. See the coverage reports and what was rejected.
