Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace
Section 2: The risk management process – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace 2.3b: 2.3 Keep people, plant and things a safe distance from electric lines (r 166)

A PCBU must ensure so far as reasonably practicable that no person, plant or thing at the workplace comes within an unsafe distance of an overhead or underground electric line. If that is not reasonably practicable, a risk assessment must be done for the work and the controls must match it and the requirements of the electricity supply authority. Contact can be fatal at any line voltage, and arcing can electrocute someone who does not touch the line. Considerations include whether workers or plant are likely to go near lines and how high they are, visibility of overhead lines, accurate location of underground lines, a safety observer, contact with the supply authority about requirements and qualifications, and emergency rescue procedures that include calling the authority to isolate supply before rescue. Safe distances depend on the work and voltage and may require the line to be isolated.
