Section 2: The risk management process – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace 2.1a: 2.1 Identify plant hazards across the whole life of the plant

Identify all hazards from plant by looking at the workplace and how work is done, and by talking to workers, manufacturers, suppliers and specialists and reviewing information, records and incident reports. Hazards arise from the physical work environment, equipment and materials, work tasks and how they are performed, and work design and management. Think through every activity in the life of the plant: installation, commissioning, operation, inspection, maintenance, repair, transport, storage and dismantling, asking whether the plant could cause entanglement, falling, crushing, trapping, cutting, puncturing, shearing, abrasion or tearing, or hazardous conditions from emissions, pressurised fluids or gas, electricity, noise, radiation, friction, vibration, fire, explosion, dust, hot or cold parts, cleaning and undisclosed asbestos. Also consider injury when an operator responds to common failure modes such as machine jams, the condition, suitability and location of the plant, and abnormal situations or misuse.
