Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace
Section 2: The risk management process – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace 2.1b: 2.1 Identify psychosocial hazards that plant creates and hazards that plant could control

Plant can cause psychosocial hazards, for example low job control and high job demands where plant sets the pace (such as conveyors), sexual and gender-based harassment where layout prevents personal space, high demands where noisy plant sits near cognitively demanding work, low demands when monitoring production lines for long periods, and poor support where workers lack the plant they need to do their work safely, well and on time. Plant can also help manage hazards: fit for purpose computer systems can increase support and decrease job demands, and more efficient service can reduce customer aggression caused by delays. Traffic movements, including reversing, loading, unloading and roll-away of mobile plant, are linked to deaths and injuries and need their own consideration.
