Designers should consider the whole life cycle of the plant or structure, from manufacture and use to demolition and disposal, and design out fall risks. Measures include mounting roof vents low; putting air conditioning and similar plant at ground level or away from roof edges; specifying non-fragile roofing and permanent safety mesh; safer gutters (large volume, away from edges, at ground level or removed); safe entry to and exit from work areas including scaffolding; permanent guardrails or parapet walls; designing for safe future maintenance of air conditioning units, sloping exteriors and windows; specifying the strength of roof members and points for guardrails and anchor points; prefabricating structures on the ground before lifting; and specific safety provisions for later installers and maintainers such as antenna and satellite dish installers, roof air conditioning contractors and window and gutter cleaners.
