Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace J6: Appendix J: Store organic peroxides and corrosives

Organic peroxides can self-react and usually need stabilisers, some are too dangerous for transport, and they react with incompatible materials. Keep packages in a purpose-designed cabinet, room or external store with explosion vents or doors, with a safety zone (for example 5 m) opposite doors and blow-out panels, use cabinet doors with friction or magnetic catches so pressure can escape, keep nothing else in the store or ensure incompatibles cannot contact the peroxides, keep the area free of waste, dirt, dust and metal filings and combustibles, exclude ignition sources inside and within an exclusion zone (for example 3 m), use sealed or laminated hardwood or coated metal shelves free of rust, leave at least 100 mm between packages and floor, ceiling or walls, keep spill equipment close, and open packages at least 3 m away and reseal before return. Determine critical and maximum temperatures from the label and SDS, keep the store in range and out of direct sunlight, install no heating, and get expert advice on cooling since air conditioners and unmodified refrigerators can ignite vapour (AS 2714). Corrosives, alkaline or acidic, are incompatible with each other and must never be stored together because the reaction can be violently exothermic and generate gas; follow the corrosives and flammable liquids standards, and provide eyewash and safety showers where they are handled or transferred.
