Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace J4: Appendix J: Control self-reactive, pyrophoric, water-reactive and flammable solids, including nitrocellulose

For self-reactive substances and mixtures, flammable solids, pyrophoric liquids and solids, self-heating substances and substances that emit flammable gas with water: build stores from non-combustible materials; install and maintain suitable fire protection; use separation distances or fire resistant screen walls; control ignition and heating sources with intrinsically safe electrical equipment; provide ventilation or extraction to avoid hazardous atmospheres; install explosion doors or vents where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may form; keep the area dry and protected from weather; and protect light or temperature sensitive materials. Tanks should keep moisture out, have accessible valves and fittings that work as designed and, where practicable, remote operation for primary shut-off valves. For nitrocellulose film and products, reduce the amount held at once, use non-combustible construction, provide outward-opening doors and clear exits, eliminate ignition sources including heating elements by guarding or enclosing them, keep surface temperatures safe, install automatic sprinklers, prevent accumulation of waste and display warning signs such as no smoking.
