Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace J5: Appendix J: Store and handle oxidising agents and solid pool chlorine

Oxidising substances support combustion and react with organic materials and hydrocarbon solvents, so check the SDS for incompatibilities. Precautions: keep them away from combustibles and readily oxidisable materials including fuel containers, sulphur and powdered metal, with stores a reasonable distance apart such as at least 5 m; place packages on clean pallets, racks or shelving so leaks are seen and avoid old weathered timber pallets; remove heat sources or keep oxidisers well below their decomposition temperature (about 15 degrees C margin); keep packages closed; do not park or drive vehicles such as forklifts nearby; do not store liquids above oxidisers; avoid dust and keep surfaces clean; and clean spills immediately and dispose of waste per local rules without mixing waste. For large quantities of solid pool chlorine apply the same precautions and keep it a safe distance, for example at least 10 m, from ammonium salts like ammonium sulfate or separate it by suitable bunding.
