A reliable water supply is needed to keep the protection system working in an emergency and should be enough for both internal fire protection equipment and additional equipment used by the emergency service. Where the main supply is insufficient it may need extra water storage or pumps, and where local authorities permit it, reliable alternative sources such as nearby rivers and dams. The attending emergency service should be asked to check regularly the adequacy of local water supply and pressure at the workplace.
