Section 6: Emergency preparedness – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace 6.2: 6.2 Provide emergency and safety equipment that is accessible and compatible

A PCBU that uses, handles, generates or stores hazardous chemicals must ensure emergency equipment is always available for use in an emergency, and that safety equipment needed to respond is provided, maintained and readily accessible, compatible with the chemicals it may meet, for example water extinguishers must not be used on oil fires. The type depends on the chemicals and quantities. Examples: over packs for leaking containers, suitable absorbent material, booms, plates or sheeting to keep spills out of drains and waterways, fire extinguishers, neutralising agents such as lime and soda ash, pumps and hoses for recovering spilled material, first aid kits including antidotes for specific exposures such as cyanide, emergency showers and eyewash stations, mops, buckets, squeegees and bins, and protective clothing and equipment for clean-up personnel.
