Section 6: Emergency preparedness – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace 6.3: 6.3 Provide fire protection and firefighting equipment designed for the chemicals (r 359)

Fire protection and firefighting equipment must be designed and built for the types and quantities of hazardous chemicals and the conditions of use, compatible with the primary emergency service's equipment, properly installed, tested and maintained, and have its latest test date recorded with results kept until the next test (r 359). Where quantities are large simple extinguishers may not suffice and a purpose-designed fire protection system should be considered, having regard to the fire load from the chemicals and other sources, compatibility of chemicals with other substances and of the equipment with the emergency service's, the proximity of other premises and Building Code requirements. The system should quickly control and extinguish a fire and protect stored chemicals from a fire next door. If equipment becomes ineffective or inoperable the implications must be assessed and risk controlled with alternative measures immediately, which may mean ceasing operations until protection is restored, and equipment must be returned to service as soon as possible.
