Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Psychosocial Hazards at Work A4: Appendix A: Provide role clarity

Lack of role clarity means unclear, inconsistent or frequently changing roles, overlapping responsibilities, conflicting or changing expectations and reporting lines, missing task information and unclear priorities. Example controls: clear position descriptions; defined management structures with a single immediate supervisor and an organisational chart; workplace and systems that match responsibilities, such as user profiles; clear instructions and an explanation of why roles were allocated; making sure those on the same task know who does what; redesigning tasks that regularly cause confusion or mistakes; updating job descriptions after change; regular check-ins; induction; guidelines for what to do when expectations conflict; checking understanding after change or restructure; and giving applicants a realistic job summary at recruitment.
