Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Psychosocial Hazards at Work A3: Appendix A: Control poor support

Poor support includes unclear or contradictory information, missing or poorly maintained tools and systems, competing for resources, inadequate training, unavailable supervisors, inability to ask for help (for example remote workers without contact), cultures that discourage mutual support, spaces that discourage discussion, unempathetic leadership and infrequent or unclear feedback. Example controls: good information systems; manageable supervisor workloads and span of control; regular constructive feedback discussions such as end of shift debriefs; clear management structures; the right tools conveniently available; supervisors reachable, including by videoconference for remote workers; layouts that enable asking for help; regular team meetings; cooperation valued over competition; maintained equipment; backfill for absences; increased support in peaks and challenging tasks; training, mentoring and induction buddy programs; hiring and developing supervisors with the skills to support their team.
