Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry 3.7h: 3.7 Identify and control work environment risks

Identify work environment risk by considering layout and movement, space, lighting, floors and surfaces including ramps and stairs, ventilation and airborne contaminants, temperature, first aid, other facilities (water, food, bathrooms), emergency plans including for homes and remote or isolated work and communications. For homes also consider animals, pests and signs of increased risk such as weapons, drug paraphernalia or very poor maintenance. Example controls under the hierarchy: eliminate the need to enter a hazardous home through remote consultation by video or attendance at a clinic, substitute hazardous cleaning products with non-toxic ones, isolate a dangerous dog in the garage during visits, engineering controls such as patient lifting devices, administrative controls such as sending more than one worker where violence is a risk, providing communication such as duress alarms, tracking worker whereabouts through arrival and departure notification, and training in de-escalation, and PPE such as gloves and masks, using a combination of controls.
