Section 3.7: Work environment hazards – Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry

Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry 3.7a: 3.7 Provide a work environment with safe layout, space, lighting, surfaces, ventilation and temperature

Healthcare and social assistance work happens in many environments and workers have the right to a safe one wherever they work. The best control is good work design that removes risk. Common hazards include poorly designed workplaces (too little space for tasks or emergencies, no escape), poor lighting and line of sight, floors and surfaces such as carpet unsuited to wheeled equipment, poorly designed stairs and ramps, clutter, lack of access control to worker-only areas and remote or isolated workplaces. The PCBU must eliminate or minimise risks by ensuring the layout allows people to enter, exit and move safely in normal conditions and emergencies, work areas have enough space, lighting is adequate for work, movement and emergency evacuation, floors and surfaces are designed, installed and maintained for safe work, ventilation is enough to avoid WHS risk and workers in extreme temperatures avoid risk.
