Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry 3.7e: 3.7 Ventilate healthcare spaces to limit airborne biological hazards

Healthcare facilities carry more risk of airborne biological hazards, and adequate ventilation reduces their concentration. Ventilation and air cleaning must suit the work and risk level. Natural ventilation by opening windows may be unsuitable in high-risk settings because it can spread hazards, and HVAC with HEPA filters may be needed, with fans possibly used to improve airflow, though the direction of airflow must always run from clean to less clean areas. HVAC systems must be well maintained and serviced to manufacturer instructions and an agreed maintenance plan, documented in a maintenance record. A ventilation engineer or occupational hygienist should be consulted for design or refitting and during airborne outbreaks, and the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines give further guidance.
