Section 4: Controlling the risks – Australia Model Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks

Australia Model Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks 4.4a: 4.4 Reduce risk when handling loads and choose and maintain hand tools

Loads: buy products in smaller loads or arrange mechanical movement of larger loads, reduce container size or capacity, use hooks or suction pads for sheet materials, and use grip devices suited to the object. Tools should be held in a neutral wrist or handshake position, allow a comfortable grip span, be light and balanced with the heaviest part behind the wrist, usable by either hand, have a good grip surface and prevent high or prolonged pinch grip. Reduce muscular effort by selecting tools suited to the task, using power tools where possible, suspending or supporting heavy repetitive tools, counterbalancing, using trigger locks where grip is held more than 30 seconds, holding workpieces in jigs or fixtures, choosing tools with minimal vibration, reducing impact shocks and limiting torque or kick-back. Inspect and service tools to manufacturer specifications because poor maintenance raises effort.
