To require annual leave during a temporary shutdown, the employer must give 28 days' written notice (or a shorter majority-agreed period), notify later-engaged affected employees as soon as reasonably practicable, and give reasonable written directions to take accrued leave; unpaid leave for undirected parts needs written agreement. For catering employees at boarding schools and residential colleges, the employer may require leave without pay during term, semester or summer breaks on at least one week's written notice (variable by agreement), must allow accrued annual or long service leave instead, count the unpaid leave for leave accrual, offer appropriate available work within the employee's skills and pay for it, and must not terminate employment because an employee cannot accept offered work.
