Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026
Schedule 3 Alternative compliance accreditation, mass (requirements 2 to 9) – Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026

Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026 S3-6: ACA mass, verification: the accuracy of mass assessment methods periodically confirmed against certified or calibrated means producing auditable evidence, or, where periodic re-weighing is not relied on, demonstration that loading controls consistently ensure axle and gross mass compliance for every load and trip, with verification sufficient for confidence in the mass management system

What does S3-6 require?

Verification gives assurance that the methods used to assess vehicle mass are accurate and dependable: the operator confirms the validity of its pre-departure mass determinations, usually by comparing assessed weights with certified or calibrated weighing devices at set intervals, which builds confidence in the loading controls and an auditable record of accuracy over time. Where loading controls are strong enough to show that axle and gross mass limits are met for every load and every trip, they may satisfy verification on their own, but the system must still be able to demonstrate reliable compliance without periodic re-weighing. Four things are looked for: the accuracy of mass assessment methods is periodically confirmed by reliable, appropriately certified or calibrated means; verification yields auditable evidence that pre-departure mass determinations are accurate; where periodic re-weighing is not relied upon, the loading controls demonstrably secure axle and gross mass compliance for every load and trip; and the verification arrangements are enough to sustain confidence in the ongoing reliability of the mass management system.
