Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026
Schedule 2 Maintenance accreditation requirements (requirements 2 to 9) – Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026

Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026 S2-7: Maintenance accreditation, training and competence: those verifying maintenance standards or performing maintenance trained in and familiar with the specific policies and procedures, trade qualifications or documented equivalent experience for complex mechanical assessment, and drivers with enough functional awareness to identify and report defects

What does S2-7 require?

Vehicle condition is kept safe by the practical skills of the people who inspect, service and manage the fleet, so anyone holding a position of responsibility in the maintenance management system must be competent to apply the operator's schedules and instructions. Three things are looked for: people responsible for verifying maintenance standards or for doing maintenance are trained in, and know, the specific policies and procedures they carry out; where a role involves complex mechanical assessment, the person can show competence through a relevant trade qualification or documented equivalent experience; and the people who drive the vehicles have enough practical awareness to notice and report defects.
