Schedule 2 Maintenance accreditation requirements (requirements 2 to 9) – Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026

Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026 S2-5: Maintenance accreditation, fault repair: reported faults systematically assessed and prioritised, deferral decisions controlled, documented and attributable, monitoring timeframes and upper repair limits defined where faults are monitored rather than repaired, accountability for deferral clear, and repairs completed and tested where appropriate before return to service

What does S2-5 require?

Fault repair is the decision-making and governance layer through which reported faults are assessed, ranked and dealt with. The maintenance system supports consistent judgement of how serious a fault is and what action it needs. Where a fault is not fixed at once, clear processes govern deferral or monitoring: how long a fault may be watched, under what conditions the vehicle may keep running, and when the repair must happen, with clear accountability for those decisions. The repair process also gives assurance that faults are properly fixed and, where appropriate, tested before the vehicle goes back into service, so that vehicle condition does not quietly deteriorate and repair decisions are transparent, justified and open to review. Five things are looked for: reported faults are systematically identified, assessed and prioritised for repair; any decision to defer a repair is controlled, written down and traceable to a named decision-maker; where a fault is monitored instead of repaired straight away, the monitoring period and the outer limit for repair are defined and recorded; accountability for monitoring or deferral decisions is clear; and there is evidence that repairs are completed and, where appropriate, tested before the vehicle returns to service.
