Schedule 2 Maintenance accreditation requirements (requirements 2 to 9) – Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026

Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026 S2-4: Maintenance accreditation, fault recording and reporting: drivers can record faults arising during a journey for hauling and trailing equipment, faults reported to the maintenance function as soon as reasonably practicable, urgent faults distinguished from routine ones, reports communicated for timely assessment, and continuity of defect management from detection to repair decision

What does S2-4 require?

Fault recording and reporting makes sure defects noticed during operation are captured, passed on and assessed promptly. Drivers can log faults as they arise, for the prime mover and the trailing equipment alike; reporting happens as soon as reasonably practicable and separates faults needing urgent action from those that can wait for routine maintenance; and defect management runs unbroken from detection through assessment to repair, wherever and whenever the fault occurs. Five things are looked for: drivers are able to record recognisable faults that occur during a journey for both hauling and trailing equipment; faults reach the maintenance function as soon as reasonably practicable after they are found; the system tells urgent faults apart from those handled through standard maintenance; reported faults are communicated in a way that allows prompt assessment and action; and the arrangements keep defect management continuous from detection to the repair decision.
