An employer wishing to employ someone under the supported wage system must take reasonable steps to change the workplace to improve the employee's capacity, such as redesigning duties, working time and work organisation, consulting other workers in the area. To allow proper assessment, the employer may employ the person on a trial of no more than 12 weeks, with up to 4 more weeks of work adjustment in some cases. The capacity assessment happens during the trial, the trial should include appropriate induction or training, and pay during it must be at least the minimum in clause E.10.3 of the current award (consolidated to 1 July 2026, read 30 September 2026). A continuing relationship after the trial requires a further contract based on the assessment.
