Parts 2 to 7 Paths and circulation: access paths, manoeuvring areas, passing areas, resting points, ramps and gangways, waiting areas – Australia Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002

Australia Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 7: Waiting areas: at least 2 priority seats and 2 allocated spaces for up to 40 non-priority seats, one more of each per further 20 seats; one of each at a bus stop; single benches count as priority seats and bench priority seats are at least 450 mm wide; allocated spaces must not compromise access paths

What does 7 require?

If a waiting area in premises or infrastructure has 40 non-priority seats or fewer it must contain at least 2 priority seats and 2 allocated spaces; with 41 or more non-priority seats an additional priority seat and allocated space must be provided for every further 20 seats above 40. A bus stop waiting area needs only one priority seat and one allocated space. Where seating is a single bench the whole bench is treated as a priority seat, and where a bench holds several priority seats each must be at least 450 mm wide. An allocated space required by this section must not compromise an access path. The section applies to seating and allocated spaces installed on or after 13 October 2026 and, after the 5-year transitional period, to those in existing premises and infrastructure.
