Parts 2 to 7 Paths and circulation: access paths, manoeuvring areas, passing areas, resting points, ramps and gangways, waiting areas – Australia Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002

Australia Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 2-PI: Access paths in premises and infrastructure: unhindered, continuous and identifiable paths from parking, streets and adjoining facilities into and through the premises, at least 1200 mm wide (850 mm on a moving walkway), with no projecting poles or fixtures and 30% luminance contrast on obstacles

What does 2-PI require?

An access path allowing unhindered passage must run along every walkway, ramp, landing and fixed gangway and comply with clause 8.1 of AS 1428.2 (1992). Access paths must let passengers approach from any accessible car parking, enter from adjoining public streets and from nearby public buildings, loading zones, taxi ranks and bus stops, and reach the public spaces and accessible facilities inside; they must be easy to identify and designed to minimise the distance a person with disability has to travel between accessible facilities. Where a path branches into parallel tracks, each track must start and end on the main pedestrian routes and offer equal convenience. The minimum unobstructed width is 1200 mm, or 850 mm where a moving walkway forms part of the path. Poles, columns, stanchions, bollards and fixtures must not project into the path, and any that abut it must show a luminance contrast of at least 30%, tested under Appendix B of AS 1428.1 (2021), against the floor or other fixed surfaces within 2 m.
