Australia Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 3: Manoeuvring areas: wheelchair turning space to clause 3.5 of AS 1428.1 (2021) in premises and infrastructure; on conveyances, areas that let a wheelchair user enter, exit and position in the allocated space, 1500 mm clear height, no projecting fixtures, located close to access paths and allocated spaces, with direct assistance where design limits manoeuvring

What does 3 require?

A manoeuvring area in premises and infrastructure must give the circulation space for a wheelchair turn in clause 3.5 of AS 1428.1 (2021). On buses (other than dedicated school buses), ferries and accessible rail, tram and light rail cars, manoeuvring areas must let passengers in wheelchairs or mobility aids enter and leave the conveyance and position the aid in the allocated space, must be clear for 1500 mm above the floor, and may be entered only by the same permitted projections as an access path; where this is not practicable the operator must give equivalent access by direct assistance. Manoeuvring areas must sit as close as practicable to access paths and allocated spaces. On accessible taxis, coaches and aircraft other than small aircraft, where design restrictions limit on-board manoeuvring the operator must ensure equivalent access by direct assistance.
