Stairs must not be the sole means of access, and escalators and inclined travellators must not be either. Stairs in premises and infrastructure must have risers between 150 and 165 mm and treads between 275 and 300 mm and comply with clause 8.1 of AS 1428.1 (2021). Internal stairs on trains, trams and light rail must comply with clauses 8.1(c) to (g) of that standard (opaque risers, nosings and riser contrast), have geometry and access path width that are safe and fit for purpose, and not intrude into access paths; ferry stairs must meet the same clauses and not intrude into access paths, their geometry being set by the National Standard for Commercial Vessels. On buses (other than dedicated school buses) steps and stairs must comply with Australian Design Rule 58, which prevails where inconsistent, with step edges and nosings to clauses 8.1(c), (e), (f) and (g) of AS 1428.1 (2021), no intrusion into the access path and no tactile indicators required at steps. The minimum unobstructed width of an escalator or inclined travellator in premises and infrastructure is 850 mm.
