Australia Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 11.5: Grabrails: to clause 14 of AS 1428.1 (2021); a grabrail or handrail wherever passengers pay fares; grabrails in every allocated space and at any point on an access path where support is likely during boarding, alighting or transit, kept at least 50 mm from adjacent surfaces with 30% luminance contrast against attachment points, adjacent surfaces and fixed surfaces within 2 m

What does 11.5 require?

A grabrail must comply with clause 14 of AS 1428.1 (2021), and a grabrail or handrail must be provided at fixed locations where passengers are required to pay fares (other than on dedicated school buses and small aircraft). On buses (other than dedicated school buses), coaches, ferries, trains, trams and light rail, compliant grabrails must be provided in all allocated spaces and, to items 14(a), (b) and (c) of that standard, at any point on an access path where a person is likely to need support or stability during boarding, alighting or transit. Grabrails other than their attachment points must be at least 50 mm from any adjacent surface or obstruction and must show at least 30% luminance contrast against their attachment points, adjacent surfaces or other fixed surfaces within 2 m. The allocated space and access path grabrail rules apply to new conveyances and grabrails installed on or after 13 October 2026.
