A handrail in premises and infrastructure must comply with clauses 8.2 and 9 of AS 1428.1 (2021), show a luminance contrast of at least 30% (tested under Appendix B of that standard) against any wall or surface within 2 m, and, where interrupted, carry a domed warning indicator on top 150 mm from the interruption, 4 to 5 mm high and 10 to 12 mm in diameter. Handrails must be placed along an access path wherever passengers are likely to need additional support or passive guidance, and continuously along both sides of an access path on an overbridge or through a subway, with interruptions permitted only at entries to staircases, walkways and ramps, at lift doors and other exits, and on a concourse at fare gates, ticket machines, information displays, service counters, staff and toilet doors and corridor entries. A handrail must not infringe an area at a roadside boarding point needed to deploy a boarding device.
