When anyone has to work closer than 3 m to exposed live conductors or parts, a competent person must identify suitable risk treatments (Figure 2.1 shows the 3 m exclusion zone for other than competent persons); safety must not be traded for operational pressure. Inside an enclosed switchboard, the work-on zone is 500 mm (Figure 2.2); live parts behind a closed cabinet door are not part of the work zone. Encroachment within 3 m may be obvious (overhead lines, crane collector rails) or not (drilling into structures, ladders extending into the zone). Information on all hazards and the controls needed must be readily available.
