Devices must not be placed in corrosive or polluted air that could enter through air gaps or vents; insulation must not obstruct operation, testing or maintenance; vented testable devices may not sit in undrained cabinets or pits; no device may be buried; water hammer is cured with a surge or hammer arrestor; connections allow removal; and containment devices are placed as near the connection point as is practicable, after the meter, with no branch between meter and device. Devices are reachable for maintenance and testing without ladders or scaffolding, with room around test taps. Leakage or discharge from vents and relief ports must be visible without creating a hazard or nuisance.
