Section 8: Racking and shear forces (bracing) – AS 1684.2:2021 Residential Timber-Framed Construction - Non-Cyclonic Areas

AS 1684.2:2021 Residential Timber-Framed Construction - Non-Cyclonic Areas 8.3.1-8.3.4: 8.3.1 to 8.3.4 Determining wind pressure, area of elevation and racking force

Bracing is designed by a set procedure: determine the wind classification, the lateral wind pressure from the tables (by storey, side, width and pitch), the area of elevation for the worst wind direction (including any verandah to be enclosed, combining parts of complex shapes), and the racking force as area times pressure in both directions; bracing is then distributed roughly in proportion to the forces. Appendix F offers a conservative alternative procedure.
