Door handles and related hardware let a person unlock and open the door using one hand, with a grip a person who cannot grasp will not slip from; throughout operation the gap between the centre grip section and the backplate or door face is 35 mm to 45 mm; D-type handles are used on sliding doors; snibs have a lever at least 45 mm long. The force at the handle may not exceed 20 N to start opening, 20 N to swing or slide the door and 20 N to hold a swing door open between 60 and 90 degrees; in 2021 these limits apply whether or not a closer is fitted (fire and smoke doors excepted), and any closer on other doors needs an adjustable delayed action or hold-open function.
