US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399)
Part 390: General applicability, registration, marking, accident records and ELD requirements – US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399)

US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399) 390.21: Marking of self-propelled CMVs with the legal name or trade name and the USDOT number, on both sides, legible from 50 feet, with rental vehicle rules (390.21)

What does 390.21 require?

Every self-propelled CMV operated by a motor carrier must be marked on both sides with the operating carrier's legal name, or one trade name, exactly as the MCS-150 shows it and the carrier's USDOT number preceded by 'USDOT', in letters contrasting sharply with the background and legible during daylight from 50 feet while the vehicle is stationary; the marking may be painted or on a removable device. Rented CMVs of 30 days or less may display the lessor's marking with the rental agreement on board; longer rentals require the operating carrier's marking. Intermodal equipment providers and vehicles operated under a driveaway-towaway arrangement have the specific rules of 390.21(f) and (g).
