UK MoD JSP 936 Dependable AI in Defence Part 1: Directive (V1.1, 2024) 83-85: Research ethics: comply with JSP 536, declare AI used in research and apply the principles at every readiness level

What does 83-85 require?

Where AI development involves trials, experiments, tests, surveys or other data collection with human participants, the research complies with JSP 536. Where MOD-funded research uses AI to reach research outcomes, such as large language model analysis, that use is clearly identified and the risk it poses to scientific rigour is analysed and communicated, in line with the Concordat to Support Research Integrity. The ethical principles apply regardless of technology readiness level, with early analysis and management of AI-specific ethical risk.
