UK MoD JSP 936 Dependable AI in Defence Part 1: Directive (V1.1, 2024) 47-48: Take legal advice from the start and communicate the controls that keep AI use lawful

What does 47-48 require?

Legal advice is obtained via the usual channels when an AI project starts and at relevant stages so that all applicable national and international law, including law on associated data, is identified and complied with; industry obtains its own advice on data and intellectual property, and wider queries go to MOD Legal Advisers. Any systems of control that keep an AI-enabled capability within national and international legal obligations, such as controls on personal data when operating abroad, are clearly communicated to the relevant stakeholders.
