Regulations 9 to 14: Agent-specific requirements for cold stress, heat stress, illumination, indoor air quality, vibration and non-ionising radiation – South Africa Physical Agents Regulations 2024

South Africa Physical Agents Regulations 2024 14: Occupational non-ionising radiation: eliminated at source where practicable; at or above the Tables 1 and 2 OEL apply alternative methods, plant producing the least radiation, maintenance, layout review, review of assessment, monitoring, screening, surveillance and controls, exposure limits and PPE; monitoring by source and type; and Annexure 1 signage at identified sources and areas interfering with biomedical devices

What does 14 require?

The employer or self-employed person eliminates occupational non-ionising radiation at source where reasonably practicable. Where exposure reaches or exceeds the Tables 1 and 2 OEL for that type of radiation, the minimum measures are alternative working methods, plant and machinery designed for the lowest achievable radiation, maintenance programmes, review of workplace, workstation and rest facility design and layout, review of the risk assessment, monitoring, screening, surveillance and controls, limits on the duration and magnitude of exposure, and personal protective equipment. Monitoring takes account of the source and the type of radiation, and clearly visible signage in the Annexure 1 form is provided at identified sources where reasonably practicable and in areas found to interfere electromagnetically with biomedical devices.
