The employer or self-employed person eliminates at source, where reasonably practicable, the risk from biological, chemical and physical hazards that affect indoor air quality and otherwise controls indoor air quality to the guidance levels of Table 3 by natural ventilation or an artificial ventilation system. An artificial system complies with the air requirements for the occupancy type in SANS 10400 Part O, is tested by a competent person at the manufacturer's intervals and at least every 24 months, and is maintained to the manufacturer's specifications or, absent them, to the risk assessment. Monitoring addresses the Table 3 parameters: the thermal environment (air temperature, air velocity and relative humidity), airborne contaminants (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, other applicable hazardous chemical agents, mould and other biological agents) and the air requirements for the occupancy type.
