Materials handling and storage must meet the applicable Part 1926 rules, including Subparts N and CC. Where access is open to more than qualified persons, storage of materials or equipment must keep a clearance from energized lines and exposed energized parts of 10 feet (3.05 m) at 50 kV or less; above 50 kV the clearance is 10 feet plus 4 inches (0.10 m) for every 10 kV beyond 50. On top of that base figure, extra distance is added to cover the greatest conductor sag and sideways swing and the height and travel of material-handling machines. Where only qualified employees may enter, nothing may be stored inside the working space around energized lines or equipment; 1926.966(b) sets how large that space is.
