Boilers and piping on or used with pile drivers must meet ASME Power Boilers (Section I), and pressure vessels must meet ASME Pressure Vessels (Section VIII). The operator needs overhead protection meeting Subpart N that does not block the operator's view and is equal in strength to 2-inch planking or comparable solid material. Leads need stop blocks so the hammer cannot be raised into the head block, and a blocking device able to carry the hammer's weight must be placed in the leads under the hammer whenever employees work beneath it. Guards over the head block top stop the cable jumping from the sheaves. Inclined leads for batter piles must be stabilized. Fixed leads need a ladder and adequate rings or similar points for the loft worker's lanyard, and loft platforms need standard guardrails. Steam hoses feeding a steam hammer or jet pipe must be tied to the hammer by chain or cable no smaller than 1/4-inch diameter to stop whipping if the joint breaks, and air hammer hoses get the same protection. Each hose connection needs a safety chain or equivalent against thrashing on disconnection. Steam line controls are two shutoff valves, one of them a quick-acting lever valve the hammer operator can reach easily. Guys, outriggers, thrustouts or counterbalances are provided as needed to keep rigs stable. Pile driving from barges or floats must meet 1926.605. In operation, engineers and winchmen take signals only from designated signalmen; employees stay clear while piling is hoisted into the leads; walls of excavated pits used for pile driving are either cut back to their angle of repose, or sheet-piled with bracing; employees are kept well out of range of falling material when steel tube piles are blown out; pile driving stops while pile tops are cut off unless the cutting location is no closer to the driver than two times the longest pile's length; and access pits for jacked piles need ladders and bulkheaded curbs against falling material.
