Subpart W: Rollover Protective Structures; Overhead Protection – OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926)

OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926) 1926.1003: 1926.1003 Overhead protection for operators of agricultural and industrial tractors used in construction

Sets requirements for overhead protection on wheel-type industrial and agricultural tractors in construction use, meant to limit operator injury from overhead hazards such as flying or falling objects and from the cover itself if the tractor upsets. The section does not require overhead protection to be fitted; it governs the protection when the employer provides it. For tractors manufactured before July 15, 2019, overhead protection that is provided must be designed and installed to the test and performance requirements of SAE J167 (protective frame with overhead protection), incorporated by reference in 1926.6, or comply with ISO 27850:2013. For tractors built on or after July 15, 2019, overhead protection that is provided must be designed and installed to ISO 27850:2013, the falling object protective structure test procedures and performance requirements for agricultural and forestry tractors, incorporated by reference in 1926.6. For machines to which the site clearing rules of 1926.604 also apply, the overhead protection may follow either 1926.604 or this section.
