Subpart W: Rollover Protective Structures; Overhead Protection – OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926)

OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926) 1926.1001: 1926.1001 Minimum performance criteria for rollover protective structures for designated scrapers, loaders, dozers, graders, crawler tractors, compactors, and rubber-tired skid steer equipment

Sets minimum ROPS performance criteria for these machine types: scrapers (self-propelled, rubber-tired), front end loaders and dozers on rubber tires, crawler-type loaders and crawler tractors, motor graders, compactors, and skid steer equipment on rubber tires. For listed machines built before July 15, 2019 (compactors and skid steers excepted), the protective frame must meet the applicable Society of Automotive Engineers recommended practices, each incorporated by reference in 1926.6: SAE J320a for scrapers, SAE J394 for front end loaders and dozers on rubber tires, SAE J395 for crawler tractors and crawler loaders, SAE J396 for motor graders, and SAE J397 on operator critical zone dimensions and characteristics; alternatively the frame may comply with ISO 3471:2008. For all listed equipment built on or after July 15, 2019, including compactors and skid steers, the protective frame must satisfy the laboratory test and performance criteria of ISO 3471:2008 for earth-moving machinery ROPS, a standard incorporated by reference in 1926.6. The section states performance criteria only; evidence of meeting them usually comes from the ROPS maker's certification, matched to the machine's date of manufacture.
