Covers the following material handling machines used in construction work, whether or not fitted with attachments: self-propelled scrapers, front-end loaders and dozers on rubber tires; crawler-type loaders and crawler tractors; motor graders; and wheel-type industrial and agricultural tractors. Compactors and skid-steer equipment on rubber tires are also covered if manufactured after July 15, 2019. Sideboom pipelaying tractors are excluded. Covered machines (other than compactors and skid-steers) made before July 15, 2019 must be fitted with rollover protective structures (ROPS) meeting the minimum performance standards in 1926.1001(b); tractors of the agricultural and industrial kind need ROPS meeting 1926.1002(b), and any overhead protection fitted to them must meet 1926.1003(b). Covered machines made on or after July 15, 2019 need ROPS meeting 1926.1001(c); for agricultural and industrial tractors the ROPS must meet 1926.1002(c), and overhead protection, when provided, must meet 1926.1003(c). A ROPS removed for any reason is remounted with bolts or welding of equal or better quality than the original mounting required. Each ROPS must carry, permanently fixed to the structure, the name and address of the manufacturer or fabricator, the ROPS model number if there is one, and the make, model or series number of the machine it is designed to fit. A machine in use with ROPS is deemed compliant if it meets the ROPS requirements in effect on April 5, 1972 of the State of California (Construction Safety Orders under Labor Code section 6312), the Army Corps of Engineers (EM-385-1-1, its March 1967 general safety requirements) or the Interior Department's Bureau of Reclamation (its construction safety and health regulations, Part II, September 1971).
