Employers must ensure that in-plant transfer, handling, storage and use of acetylene in cylinders comply with CGA Pamphlet G-1-2009 (Acetylene), incorporated by reference. Piped acetylene systems must comply with Chapter 9 (Acetylene Piping) of NFPA 51A-2006, Standard for Acetylene Charging Plants. Where the employer can demonstrate that the facilities, equipment, structures or installations used to generate acetylene or charge acetylene cylinders were installed before February 16, 2006, or were approved for construction or installation before that date but built on or after it, the employer may instead comply with Chapter 7 (Acetylene Piping) of NFPA 51A-2001. CGA G-1.2-2006 part 3 is cited for additional information on piping. Facilities, equipment, structures or installations used to generate acetylene or to charge (fill) acetylene cylinders must comply with NFPA 51A-2006, with the same February 16, 2006 grandfather option allowing compliance with NFPA 51A-2001 for plants constructed or installed, or approved for construction, before that date.
